Coffee Dye Cotton

Coffee Dye Cotton

My first experiment with dyeing a found cardigan in natural dye materials. I chose coffee because it’s supposed to bind to plant based materials without a mordant (I’m still avoiding using mordants in my home kitchen). I realized that the coffee dye did alter the color of this cardigan from its original white to this beige, very light brown, almost “latte” color but much of the saturation did rinse away. I’m going to try using animal based fibers next as they are supposed to hold the dye much better than plant fibers like cotton. All in all, I’m happy with this experiment but will likely try this cardigan in coffee dye with an alum mordant in the future.
