My interest in natural dyes and plant-based dyes is ever growing. Inspired, and somewhat awestruck, by the possibilities of plant-based dyes in fiber and textile work, I attended a workshop with my friend, Sasha Duerr, of the Permacouture Institute. Set on an organic farm in the seaside town of Bolinas, California, the workshop focused on seasonal plants that can effectively be used to create a range of colors for dyes. We used wild fennel, blackberries, plums, sunflowers, and artichokes to create natural dyes. Inspired to use plant materials to add color and subtlety to my own work–and to further engage with sustainable fashion–I left the workshop eager to keep working with natural dyes.
